How to prep your garden for Spring this March
It’s nearly Spring time gardeners! As we welcome in another new season and wave goodbye to Winter, many of you might find yourselves pondering how to prepare your garden properly for Spring. Well, to help with the gardening transition, we’ve put together a list of essential jobs to help prep your garden for a successful start to Spring.
Look after your lawn
After a long recent couple of frosty months, it’s no surprise that most gardeners have probably been less inclined to go outside – let alone spend time mowing their lawn. With the warmer weather approaching, why not make a start by mowing your lawn. Make sure you wait for dryer weather, and the for the last frost to be well and truly behind us.
Spruce up your gardening tools
After months of being locked away in the shed, it is finally time to start using your gardening tools once again. But it may be worth giving them a clean; a quick once over to make sure they are in good condition before being put to good use this Spring. Irrigatia’s own gardener George recommends treating wooden handles with linseed oil and honing tools that need to be sharp.
Deadhead those daffodils
As all gardeners know, daffodils mark the arrival of Spring. But unfortunately, not every Daffodil makes it to full bloom, so it is vital to deadhead your daffodils once their colour starts to fade. By doing this, it allows those beautiful flowers to store energy so they are able to flower the following year.
Feed those flowerbeds
Spring means longer, brighter days and warmer weather – the kick-start many of your flowers and plants need to get ready for flowering. Now’s the ideal time to give them a helping hand with a little extra energy, so invest in some good quality fertilise to add to your flowerbeds in Spring. George recommends sprinkling with rock dust and maintaining an organic mulch over the soil. This will help keep the weeds down, the moisture in and also feed your plants as the worms pull it into the soil.
And tidy up your borders too
Weeds are the bane of every gardener's life at the best of times, but unfortunately, they’re likely to have taken hold during the winter months whilst we’ve had our feet up a little bit more. It’s vital that we get back outdoors now and remove as many weeds as possible to prevent the growth of plants and flowers being hindered this Spring.
Give your garden paths a makeover
It’s easy to neglect them, but it’s important to remember the importance of having a clean garden path – there’s nothing worse than having a tidied lawn, pruned trees, but a path covered in mud and algae. And it can also be a health and safety hazard! A quick power-wash and sweep usually does the trick.
Install Water Butts
If you haven’t already installed water butts in your garden, Spring is a brilliant time to do so. With the season providing plenty of rainfall, why not make the most out of this by using the recycled rainwater to feed your garden? By introducing water butts to your garden and connecting an Irrigatia kit, you’ll be watering your gardening in the most eco-friendly and energy-efficient way possible. Our Irrigatia kits use solar power to pump water directly from the barrel, so you can say goodbye to wires and hose pipes – for good. Learn more about our Irrigatia kits.
Even if you don’t manage to do every gardening task, by just tackling a few, you can ensure a brilliant start to the next season. So, grab your gloves and get gardening for a successful season of Spring ahead!
