6 ways to make your garden more drought resistant
There are so many ways for gardeners to be more efficient and conserve water in their outdoor spaces, whilst still keeping their plants happy and thriving, and creating a drought resistant garden is a brilliant way to do so – it sets you up for success from the outset! Here are a few of our simple tips and tricks to transform your garden into a drought-resistant paradise.
1. Choose drought-resistant plants
Our first simple and easy step towards making your garden drought-resistant is to carefully choose which plants you have in your garden. Drought resistant plants won’t just save you time and energy when it comes to caring for them – but they will save your water too. A few of our favourite drought resistant plants include lavender, jasmine and geraniums.
2. Stay on top of weed growth
Remember, weeds don’t just make your borders look messy and unkept – they’re detrimental for your plants when it comes to water consumption too. It doesn’t matter how often you water your plants, with the presence of weeds there will always be a constant battle between them for both water and nutrients. By staying on top of weed growth and removing them as often as possible, you’ll be able to make sure your plants aren’t competing with those pesky weeds once again!
3. Prioritise watering ALL new plants
Keeping your plants watered thoroughly in the first season of growth is vital to make sure they establish well. Once established, if watered correctly at the planting stage, you’ll notice they become far more drought tolerant.
The same applies when planting trees, shrubs and climbers too! Ideally you should aim to do this around autumn or early winter as they’ll establish quicker, meaning less watering will be required during the upcoming summer when there may be less rain.
4. Install water butts immediately!
Many gardeners panic at the slight mention of a hosepipe ban, however, your garden never has to suffer from dehydration again with the help of a water butt. Ditch the outdated and inefficient hosepipe in your garden and replace it with a water butt, to save lots of water, time, and energy when it comes to watering.
The process is both simple and sustainable. Rather than using mains water, water butts store rainwater which can then be recycled. By connecting an Irrigatia kit, you can ensure your garden is automatically watered every three hours, keeping your plants thriving, happy and hydrated all year round. You’ll never have to endure the effects of another hosepipe ban again!
5. The more mulching the better!
Mulching is absolutely essential for the conservation of water in your garden. The technique is simple and an incredibly great way to retain water in your soil through:
- Reducing weed growth
- Slowing down the movement of rain from borders during heavy spells
- Building soil structure – encouraging the retention of moisture for longer
Organic mulch is the best for this and can be made using decomposed plant matter, grass clippings, leaf mould, bark, or straw. You can ensure your plants remain hydrated at all times just by taking the time to stay on top of mulching.
6. Get yourself an Irrigatia kit!
And last, but certainly not least, why not get your very own Irrigatia kit? Once installed, you won’t have to worry about your garden lacking in moisture every again – Irrigatia will do the hard work for you. Using recycled rainwater stored in water butts, our Irrigatia kits will respond to the weather to give your plants the perfect amount of water.
