5 ways to make the most of a little extra time at home this Spring

by Norwoods Gardener | Apr 06, 2020

These are unprecedented times, and many people will be feeling uncertain and unsettled about what the next few weeks of social distancing and isolation will bring. But, here at Irrigatia, we’re encouraging you to see this current state of affairs as a chance to make the most of a little extra time at home and get out in the garden – whether you’ve gained an extra couple of hours at home per day in lieu of your regular commute, or working at home means you’re looking for new ways to spend your lunch break, we’re bringing you all the best ways to incorporate fresh air and your garden into your new daily routine.

Get your daily dose of fresh air

Whilst we’re being told to self-isolate and stay at home, it’s still important to ensure you enjoy a little fresh air as regularly as possible – it’s key to improving oxygen flow throughout the body, boosting serotonin levels and improving mental wellbeing as a result. We’re currently able to leave the house for one form of exercise and for necessary food and medical items, but you don’t have to go so far to enjoy some air time! Now is the time to dust off your garden chairs and set up a spot in your garden for you to sit and enjoy some air throughout the day.

Get busy in the garden

Of course, if you love gardening just as much as we do, your thoughts will have immediately turned to all the extra outdoor time you’ll be able to enjoy! Now is the time to get cracking with all of your Spring and Summer prep, including weeding, planting early potatoes or bare-root roses. And if you’re not the biggest fan of gardening, we’re encouraging you to give it a go even in the most basic form – gardening is a soothing and relaxing activity which will help your mental health, particularly needed during a slightly more stressful time.

Find joy in the little things

Spring is finally here; the sun is shining and our gardens are growing! Now is the time to really appreciate the smaller things around us and moments in life to give yourself a boost. Take a little time each day to look out of your window or stroll around your garden or better yet make the most of the view from your window by planting attractive or interesting plants – to give you the benefit of feeling like you’re in the garden whether you’re inside or outside. Taking care of yourself is key, so remember to unplug every once in a while, and have a good laugh to keep your spirits up.

Tick something off your list, or try something completely different!

You’ve got all of this extra time on your hands at the moment, so why not make the most of it? Use this time to get those most despised garden jobs out of the way, whether you find deadheading completely dull or the thought of cleaning out your water butt makes you groan in despair, ticking these jobs off your list will give you a great sense of achievement. Alternatively, if you’ve always wanted to try something a little different, now’s your chance! Why not start your own veg patch, or try growing a new type of flower you’ve always admired?

Be kind to our planet

As more and more people fall into the self-isolating lifestyle, we’re seeing global pollution levels reducing – but there’s always more to be done! Our Irrigatia systems are a kind-to-the-planet way of keeping your plants happy and well-watered, using recycled rain water and solar panels to power them – we may be biased, but why not use your extra home time to invest in your garden, and set up an Irrigatia system ready for the warmer months? You’ll be thanking us later when you’re able to sunbathe instead of running around with a watering can…
